Think about this: How quickly do you send emails to the digital trash can? Or how about the pop up ads that seemingly test your ability to click the red X to close out? In the digital realm, these messages are lost in the shuffle, forcing users to never trust most of what they see on their screens.

Print media continues to thrive because there is a trust among senders to recipients. While digital messages are spread quickly and less reliable, print offers a direct, trustworthy source of information. No acquired information that builds upon the original or any edited messages along the way. Print pieces allow users to receive their message directly, building a reliable source for information and trust.

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Surely Albert Einstein wasn’t contemplating the world of marketing with his famous quote, but this insight should resonate with marketers. If your marketing strategy is broken, fixing it with the same old schtick will only make you stir crazy.

Marketing success will depend on your flexibility for change. It’s important for companies to see when a strategy is failing and take the appropriate action. Don’t push the campaign harder or put more into it—try something different. Find ways to give more value for the same price or provide unbelievable dedication to customers. Use new, customer focused actions to help revitalize a flailing marketing strategy.

One of the most important aspects of a business is an identity. Having a well-developed brand identity will ensure brand recognition among customers. Focus time and energy into creating a logo, a color palette and maybe even a slogan to build this recognition. Remember that these items will influence the design and characteristics of future marketing tools.

Becoming a marketing services provider must begin by looking both inward and outward. Take a look at the landscape of different companies and business trends and apply them to your own vision. As much as starting your own business is about you, it’s also about the market as a whole.

For this, it’s important to find answers to important questions. Perhaps the first is what will make your company different? Look at your competitors and define your own way to engage with a target audience. Compare your product to theirs and strengthen resolve by showing why your business is better.

Along the same lines, you must define your products and services and the problems you can solve for clients. Finding your strongest selling points and what makes your company different is vital for the marketing of your brand and how you sell to customers.

To make even the smallest PR splash, start by simply emailing a photo or tagline to local media outlets. Or go extreme and hire a PR firm for some help. Either way, get your company’s name out there for potential clients to see.

On the same note, a little personal PR will benefit a company as well. Small business owners need to develop and practice an elevator pitch—a one to two sentence statement that describes your business. And remember, don’t sell it short. Elaborate on the benefits and why you’re the prime choice for a customer’s needs.

There’s a ton of common wisdom thrown around the blogosphere about how to run your business, how to succeed at marketing and how to avoid failure.

The unfortunate thing is that much of this advice just isn’t specific enough. Even otherwise good advice can sour your printing company if your circumstances don’t reflect the intended audience’s.

For instance: Follow the plan. While you need to create a solid business and marketing plan, the point of a plan is to start taking action, but being willing to deviate. “No battle plan survives contact with the enemy.” Being inflexible often leads to failure.
